The charm of Broadway

Leaving a beloved place always return to it at some point. Broadway in New York City is a place for me, and I back so often can it like me. Sometimes I take a flight guard and then a taxi to JFK or La airport to a hotel in Manhattan near or Broadway; at other times, I will return to it, my heart and my writings.

Broadway has inspired many poets. From the old school, Sandcastle has the pessimistic look when he says: «hearts you know hate /...» The dreams that were lost curse / in the dust of your rough and niedergetrampelt stones. "Walt Whitman's excited and dynamic words describe more what I feel about this plot of New York City:" florid with blood, thoughtful, considerations hot passion / sultry with perfume, with abundant and flowing dresses undivided. "" In fact, is "Broadway" and was the theatre district, not only for the United States, but also for the whole world

Broadway, extends the Broadway with Times Square at its core today from 34th Street to the 56th, the East and the West of the Avenue, called. Broadway is famous for his stage shows. The longest running Broadway shows so far are Les Misérables, A chorus line, the Phantom of the Opera, cats, Oh! Calcutta, beauty and the beast and rent.

Broadway's is always a theater district far back to the time before the revolution. Mid century when the staging of the plays of Shakespeare wanted to bring two actors to Manhattan, Broadway were sown in the seeds. The first Theatre in Manhattan was in Nassau Street. Later Barnum operated an entertainment p.t. complex on Broadway and Prince Street. During the first years, a variety of shows was operating and the middle class. If the Astor Place Theatre opened rose this theatre goers in a, appeal against the ruling class audience.

The first performance added dance and music for the black crook, 1866. Its duration was five and a half hours. This musical attracted so many audience quality entertainment was musicals. At the turn of the twentieth century were some of the earliest musical Cakewalk, George Washington Jr., a trip to the Coontown, fortune-teller, little Johnny Jones and 45 minutes from Broadway.

Twentieth century babes in Toyland, naughty Marietta and the Red Mill brought. Since colored lights not long white lamps currently used; so, Broadway took the nickname "the great white way."

The advent of film industry and the actors Equity Association strike were feared to Broadway standstill; on the contrary: flourished during the roaring twenties, Broadway and his merry repertoire and Ziegfeld revues added serious drama. Oklahoma was first hit. This time, Noel Coward, Rudolf Friml, Sigmund Romberg produced unforgettable work alongside with the eternal Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, and Rodgers and Hart.

Then, 1947, evolved Tony Awards recognize the best performers and benefits the American Theater and especially Broadway. Today, most shows for profit by the many Theatre facilities are in the area although some of non profit organizations such as the roundabout theatre company, Manhattan Theatre Club and the Lincoln Center Theater production. On the average run click musicals over not musical plays, and some of the successful musicals and plays on tour in other cities go in the low season or close your curtains on Broadway.

In addition to the Broadway theater district offer smaller off Broadway theater, between 57th and 72nd streets are less respected, less expensive, more experimental and daring plays. Occasionally, a successful off Broadway show on a Broadway stage is run later. Rent, little shop of horrors, Godspell, chorus line, Sunday in the park with George among such works.

Then, in Manhattan attention you off off Broadway theater with less that 100 seats for staging smaller amateur performances such as flea Theater in TriBeCa before. After k. W. Bromley in its acceptance an innovative Theatre Award called in 2005 to off off Broadway "Indie Theatre", are off Broadway shows indie theater shows sometimes called.

Biggest rival is Broadway shows television today. The best plays and musicals and the most talented Theatre actors to which corniest TV shows for public recognition to compete, mainly because of high costs of tickets and the amount of people a theatre can hold. Watching a live stage show, is a serious game, or a musical a great thrill can be allocated by the movies or television.

For me, add the streets of Broadway line Theatre, musicals, comedy clubs, and movie houses. Broadway and times square is where I can go to and from two to five - star hotels, coffee shops like Starbucks, Diners and gourmet restaurants; or where can I browse through all kinds of shops, but above all gift shops, the theatre utensils like props, to sell costumes and masks; or can I walk and the excitement of the other pedestrians to absorb the street corner preachers and the lights of the facilities while I watch the limousine, performances and actors, actors bring the autographs of the theatre building, or to sell an occasional scalper last minute tickets shows the corner of his eye guard the whereabouts of the police.

As Whitman, I also "arise, answering, rise in the sidewalks, merge with the quantity and gaze," because with all its Coquettishness Broadway makes life around turn our drama of existence.

Curtain call - comedian Joseph Kline Emmet in Albany, NY

In the 1880s, nobody of Albany was a more welcome and popular sight as Joseph Kline Emmet. Cordial, good-natured, generous, and often carry a trifle of tipsy, the renowned actor rule with the warmest greetings from all segments of society of the city was fulfilled as he took his almost ritualistic promenades along Pearl Street. "Fritz" was the stage name to use as it universally and lovingly responded in kind to the greetings known, including records of the day both Newsboys and bank President in his local army testify admirers and friends.

After all, Fritz was a big star in his day. When and where always took he cried to see your favorite comedian and no exporting on the stage full houses, it was said, offered a higher salary than the one-time Missouri mill workers. Well over a century ago floated Fritz's average annual gain to the 100,000 $-brand (the equivalent of more than two million dollars today).

But could be a star for Serendipity and a generally unsuspecting Albany public never become Fritz. The son first went poverty stricken Irish immigrants, Joseph Kline Emmet at the age of ten, as the sole support of his mother and two sisters in a St. Louis mill in return for $1.50 work a week and all the together could eat the ailing family. Emmet was only a few years on his own later by the death of his mother and his sisters early marriages.

Before long he found his way to the stage and into the minstrel circuit where he role of the "Fritz," America's first dialect comedy characters (think Katzenjammer kids) introduced. Understandably, at least a German philologist and has in recent years that rubbed cultural reality of the nineteenth century, but in the simple, unself-conscious ethnic caricature of Fritz's day, based the character landlord from his time in St. Louis rooming life loose one of Emmet.

Although Emmet already Fritz variety theatres and minstrel company was been portrayed for several years in New York City, it was his first appearance in a piece, the seine-- and Fritz's-glory backed up. In one tells the story, which is in itself, Fritz, melodramatic our cousin English was written during a hectic all-night session only hours before your scheduled opening on a Buffalo theatre. This is at least the local version.

With a bottle of ink on one hand and a bottle of liquor to the other Charles Gayler (some local stories have it "Gaylord"), then a leading figure of the American Theatre, scribbled furiously the game that has been to make rich and famous Emmet. The work was completed at the last minute and the spontaneous and uneducated actor took the stage.

The game was only moderately well received during the first week in Buffalo, but it was there that fate intervened and Emmet gave a much needed break. The closing tag of commitment was the theatre manager a telegram from the next scheduled performers, informing him that not in the position posting to keep would. Emmet was asked to fill. Unlikely, the scene repeated the following week, and the game ended with an impressive three-week do that seemed to refute the mediocre notices he had.

Emmet in Albany--arrived were two weeks late - audience convinced that advanced commitment must certainly mean a big hit. The enthusiastic, standing room only crowds the Emmet ensures here greeted his success and not played small part Fritz make a theatrical phenomenon. This is certainly the story Albany writer, the time recount. Perhaps more goal the accounts in the theatrical stories emerge note, that the game, the first of four scripts for Emmet character, Fritz von Vonderblinkenstoffen, written for a two-month run that actually July 1870 had opened in New York at Wallack's Theatre 11 followed one year-tour before the show returned to New York.

But it is clear that Fritz was immediately and then always a favorite of the Albanians and the feeling was fully reciprocated. A dozen years after his first, random visit of the city, Fritz returned, to make his home Albany. The imposing some garish mansion built in 1882 to Van Rensselaer Boulevard he there but after his early death at age 51 was passed as "Fritz Villa" known, during the ten years lived the property into other hands and underwent a name change.

Joseph Kline Emmet died on 15 June 1891, succumb to pneumonia and a general State of heat dissipation that he even attributed to "demand an insatiable sometimes alcohol." At his funeral, praised the Reverend Dr. Farrar of Trinity Methodist Church Fritz as a man ", which was all souled and kind, but his own worst enemy." Emmet was buried rural cemetery, like so many prominent Albanians through the centuries in Albany.

As for Emmet Albany estate his oversized home soon developed a meaning apart from his legacy to a central location for generations of Albanians. 1891 Not long after Emmet death, New York Governor David Hill purchased "Fritz Villa" and called it "Wolfert's Roost" under the new name of a Washington Irving history. It kept that name in later years, when it was one of the region are most popular and prominent country clubs.
