Curtain Call - actor Joseph Kline Emmet in Albany, New York

In the 1880s, no man on Albany was a more timely and more popular than Joseph Kline Emmet view. Cordial, jovial, generous and often a drunk bagatelle, that the famous actor was generally met with more greetings from all segments of society in the city that he took his almost ritual walks down Pearl Street. "Fritz", using the stage name by which he was universally and affectionately known, has responded in kind for the greetings including day records attest both workers and Chairmen of its local army of fans and friends of the Bank.

After all, in its time, Fritz was a major star. When and where it took to the stage attic demanded to see their favorite comic and no interpreter, it has been said, commissioned a salary higher than the factory worker Missouri unique.Plus a century earlier, the average annual salary of Fritz oscillated around of the benchmark of $100,000 (equivalent of over two million today).

But Fritz could never have become a star if not for Serendipity and Albany public generally guileless.Le son of Irish immigrants ravaged by poverty, Joseph Kline Emmet first work at the age of ten years, as the sole support of his mother and two sisters in St. Louis plant in exchange for $1.50 per week and hominy struggling family could eat. Emmet was left entirely on its own a few years later by the death of his mother and his sisters early marriage.

Before long, he found his way to the stage and the minstrel, circuit where he introduced the first German dialect "Fritz" character comedy character America (think Katzenjammer Kids).Naturally, at least a German scholar has used this cultural reality of the 19th century, in recent years, but in the easy unself-ethnic conscious cartoon day Fritz, the character was loosely based on one of the owners of Emmet of his time living in houses of St. Louis homes.

Emmet was already portraying Fritz for several years in New York City various theatres and companies minstrel, is his first appearance in a long piece which won her - and Fritz - the célébrité.Dans a tell the story that is melodramatic self-confidence, Fritz, our German cousin has written a night frenzy hours before its opening in a Buffalo Theatre session. It is at least, the local version.

With a bottle of ink in one hand and a bottle of brandy to another, Charles Gayler (some local stories have it "Gaylord"), then one of the figures in the American Theatre, the griffonné furiously Premier exhibit was to make rich Emmet and célèbres.Le work is completed at the last minute and improvised and non-educated actor took the stage.

The room was only moderately well received during the initial execution of a week in Buffalo, but it is there that fate intervened and gave Emmet essential pause.Commitment, closing date theatre manager has received a telegram of artists at the next request informing them that they did would be able to keep the réservation.Emmet step asked fill.Surprisingly, the scene repeated the following week, and exhibit is found with an impressive three weeks run which appeared to contradict the poor opinion, he had earned.

By the arrival of Emmet in Albany - two end - week public were convinced that extended engagement must certainly mean a major success. The enthusiastic crowd, standing-room only Emmet hosted here insured his success and played no small role in the manufacture of Fritz a theatrical phenomenon. In any case, it is Albany writers of the counting of time history .the ' goal perhaps more accounts than theatrical stories Please note that the exhibit, the first of the four scripts written for Emmet, Fritz Von character Vonderblinkenstoffen, actually opened in New York at the Wallack Theatre on July 11, 1870, for a two month which was followed by a visit of the year prior to the show back in New York.

But what is clear is that Fritz was immediately and never after the favourite Albanian and the feeling was reciprocated pleinement.Une ten years after his first visit fortuitous city, Fritz returned to Albany its imposing mansion domicile.Le a bit garish, that he has erected on the Boulevard Van Rensselaer in 1882 was known as "Fritz Villa" in the decade that he lived there, but after his death at the age of 51 succession passed in the other hand and underwent a name change.

Joseph Kline Emmet died on June 15, 1891, succumbed to pneumonia and a general State of dissipation which himself attributed to "a desire insatiable sometimes for alcohol". at his funeral, the Reverend Farrar of Trinity Methodist Church Fritz as a man "who was all-souled and benevolent, but his worst enemy."Emmet was buried at the Albany Rural cemetery as many prominent Albanian throughout the centuries.

As Albany real estate Emmet, oversized home quickly developed significance outside of his inheritance became a central to generations of Albanian 1891, when shortly after the death of Emmet, Governor of New York David Hill purchased "Fritz Villa" and renamed "The Wolfert Roost", taking the name again to a tale of Washington Irving.Il has retained this name, years later, while it became one of most popular country and the most prominent area clubs.
